1/11/2005 – The Szabadka (Subotica) Initiative: AHF signs joint declaration of the Szabadka Initiative by ethnic Hungarian political parties and human rights organizations from successor states in an appeal to the Hungarian Government for more coherent support, coordinated planning, and dual citizenship.
AHF was among fifteen organizations from Europe, North America, and Latin America that met January 5-6, 2005 in Szabadka/Subotica (Vajdaság/Vojvodina, Serbia-Montenegro) to join forces in persuading the Government of the Republic of Hungary to coordinate with them its efforts to assist ethnic Hungarians living as national minorities in Romania, Slovakia, Serbia-Montenegro, Ukraine, Croatia, and Slovenia.
All participants signed a joint declaration in which they:
Express their disappointment over the failure and low turnout (37%) at the December 5 Hungarian national referendum on dual citizenship, but thanked those who voted in favor of granting citizenship to ethnic Hungarians residing beyond the country’s borders. [AHF notes that 51% of those voting, voted in favor of the referendum]
Chastise political forces in Hungary that led a negative campaign and used false predictions about the consequences of extended dual citizenship in order to urge a No vote, or not voting at all. They declared their joint belief that the Hungarian nation remains indivisible in its language, culture, and history, political party wars notwithstanding.
Expect the Hungarian National Assembly to honor the will of the majority in the referendum and pass legislation that enables Hungarians beyond Hungary’s borders to acquire citizenship without changing their country of residence.
Declare their fundamental political goal as securing conditions for minority Hungarians to remain and prosper in their ancient homelands. The preconditions to this they see in various legal and practical autonomies (local self-government) as well as in moral, political, and material support by the Government of Hungary.
Urge positive discrimination in assisting Hungarian minorities facing the gravest conditions, i.e. those without promising prospects to join the European Union, in Ukraine and Serbia-Montenegro.
Continue to consider the Hungarian Standing Conference (in which the Hungarian Government and Hungarian parliamentary parties also participate) to be the most important arena for coordinating their joint actions, and request its convening by mid-April.
Found a new Forum of External Hungarian Organizations to convene whenever the interests of minority Hungarians and the nation as a whole so warrant.

és a kettos állampolgársággal kapcsolatban megjelent cikkekbol)

All major ethnic Hungarian parties from successor states are invited at the highest level to work out a joint strategy of next steps on the dual-citizenship drive. Mini Máért Szabadkán….
A kettos állampolgárságról tárgyalnak
a határon túli szervezetek képviseloi —
A kétnapos megbeszélést követoen pénteken
zárónyilatkozatban foglalják össze követeléseiket
Csütörtökön és pénteken Szabadkára
irányul a Kárpát-medencei magyarság figyelme.
A Vajdasági Magyar Szövetség kezdeményezésére
kapcsolatban.
A szabadkai diákotthonban csütörtökön délután háromkor kezdodik a megbeszélés.

A romániai RMDSZ képviseletében is többen érkeznek a mini Máértre. Markó Béla elnököt több alkalommal is hívtuk telefonon, de nem sikerült tole nyilatkozatot kérni.
Kárpátaljáról Kovács Miklós, a Kárpátaljai Magyarok Kulturális Szövetségének elnöke érkezik a megbeszélésre, Gajdos Istvánt, az Ukrajnai Magyarok Demokratikus Szövetségének elnökét is várták, de mint nem hivatalosan megtudtuk, Gajdos úr nem kapott beutazási vízumot Szerbiába.
Horvátországból Jakab Sándor, a HMDSZ ügyvezeto elnöke utazik Szabadkára. — Nagy várakozással tekintek a szabadkai találkozó elé.
Szlovéniából Thomka György, a Muravidéki
Magyar Önkormányzati Nemzeti Közösség elnöke,
és Pozsonyec Mária parlamenti képviselo érkezik
a megbeszélésre.
Jóllehet elsosorban a Kárpát-medencei magyarságot
érinti a kettos állampolgárság kérdése,
a szabadkai összejövetelre meghívást kaptak a
nyugati magyarság képviseloi is. A szervezok jelezték
Mészáros László a nyugati magyarság
képviseletében vesz részt a megbeszélésen,
Deák Erno, a Nyugat-Európai Magyar Szervezetek Szövetségének
Kunckelné Fényes Ildikó, a Latin-Amerikai Magyar
Országos Szervezetek Szövetségének elnökeként
képviseli a magyarságot, Nagy Sándor pedig Washingtonból
érkezik a megbeszélésre. A hazai szervezetek közül
a Máért tagjai, a VMSZ és a VMDP politikusai lesznek
ott a szabadkai ülésen.
A megbeszélés második napján zárónyilatkozat készül. [< back to all AHF news]

In the last six months, non-Serbs, including members of Vojvodina’s

4/5/2004 – Hungarians Fear Renewed Ethnic Cleansing: Serbs step up intimidation of Hungarians in Vojvodina…Minority communities in Serbia’s former Hungarian northern province of Vojvodina (Vajdaság) are feeling the heat after recent stunning gains by Serbian ultra-nationalists raised fears of a return to the ethnic violence of the 1990s.

Residents in the province’s capital, Novi Sad (Ujvidek), were woken by drunken mobs over Serbian New Year on January 13-14 shouting, “Hey Serbs let’s butcher the Croats! Hey Serbs, let’s butcher the Hungarians!” In recent developments, Serbs riot and set historic landmarks on fire and spray graffiti saying “We Will Kill Hungarians.” [more]
5/13/2004 – Vojvodina Leader
Accuses Belgade Elite of Oppression…The speaker of Vojvodina’s parliament,
Nenad Canak, has accused political elites in Belgrade of harassing pro-European
and democratic parties in that province, Deutsche Welle’s “Monitor” reported
on 12 May. Canak said the alleged oppression is the result of a slide
toward increasing nationalism in Belgrade. In early March, members of
Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica’s coalition slammed an initiative
for greater autonomy for Vojvodina as a “direct attack on the integrity
of the Serbian state and the interests of the [ethnic Serbian] majority
population.” The so-called Subotica Initiative as led by Canak, who heads
the League of Social Democrats in Vojvodina, and Jozef Kasza of the League

that was given to Serbia/Yugoslavia.)
Tennis Superstar – She has won 9 Grand Slam
singles titles and bronze in Sydney 2000!
Seles (pronounced sell-esh and spelled Szeles Monika) won the European junior championship at the age of ten. Born to a Hungarian family in the former Hungarian province of Vojvodina, she moved to the United States in 1986, and in 1989 turned professional. In 1990 she won her first French Open, and in each of the following two years she won the Australian, United States, and French opens. Seles won the Australian Open in early 1993, but later that year, while resting between sets during a tournament in Hamburg, Germany, she was stabbed by a spectator. The incident caused Seles to withdraw from competition in 1993 and 1994. Seles returned to competition in 1995 and won the initial tournament of her comeback, the Canadian Open. In 1996 she again won the Australian Open.
Monica is a fierce competitor and is still going strong into the new millennium including winning the Bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics!
