The AHF Disaster Relief Fund: 2013 Flooding

ALERT!2013 Flooding in Hungary - Help now! The American Hungarian Federation has activated its Disaster Relief Fund to help families affected by recent flooding. 100% of your tax-deductible donations to AHF go directly to help victims in Hungary using as many volunteer resources as possible to maximize the impact of the funds.

The Danube river reached record levels in Budapest where dikes have been strengthened at critical points to protect the capital from flooding. Thousands of volunteers have mobilized to defend the villages and towns along the river, piling more than three million sandbags beside its dikes. Despite the valiant efforts that have spared many, tens of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes and there have been at least a dozen deaths as a result of floods that have hit Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic over the past week. Almost 40 towns and villages have been affected.

Help now! All donor's names are added to the Wall of Honor!

On Monday, October 4th, a large reservoir filled with toxic red sludge in western Hungary ruptured, releasing approximately 700,000 cubic meters (185 million gallons) of stinking caustic mud, which killed many animals, at least four people, and injured over 120 - many with chemical burns.10/12/2010 - In October 2010, AHF activated its Disaster Relief Fund to help victims of the toxic “Red Sludge” disaster following the October 4th rupture of a large reservoir filled with toxic red sludge in western Hungary. The rupture released approximately 700,000 cubic meters (185 million gallons) of stinking caustic mud, which killed many animals, at least eight people, and injured over120 - many with chemical burns. But the 12-foot-high flood of sludge inundated and completely destroyed several towns, sweeping cars off the road as it flowed into the nearby Marcal River. Governor Pataki issued a call to help - At the request of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, former New York Governor George Pataki issued a call to raise money to assist the victims of the "Red Sludge" disaster in Hungary. Flooding2005: AHF distributes Disaster Relief Funds to Transylvania and the Arpadhon (Albany, LA) Hungarian Settlement Historical Society (HSHS). The AHF Disaster Relief Fund targeted Hungarian disaster victims, currently those affected by hurricane Katrina and Transylvania flooding. Overall, the fund has took in $6,500.00. The $4500.00 was distributed to Székelyudvarhely Mayor Szász Jeno on November 5th. A week earlier, AHF distributed funds to Judith Petho of the Arpadhon (Albany, LA) Hungarian Settlement Historical Society (HSHS). Julia Bika of the Louisiana Hungarians, who also suffered the wrath of Katrina, represented AHF as our liaison to HSHS.

Donations were received from as far away as Australia. Special thanks must be given to San Diego’s House of Hungary who collected $2500.00. AHF also thanks other organizations involved in the relief effort. The Minnesota Hungarians collected $1300.00. The Hungarian Knights of St. John (Johannita Rend) another $300.00. And there are many more stories like this. On October 8th in East Brunswick, New Jersey, the AHF Gala Dinner to support Hungarian Schools in the Csango Regions of Transylvania raised $15,000.00. The Hungarian Freedom Fighter was Time Magazine's "Man of the Year"Hungary's 1956 Revolution marked the first tear in the Iron Curtain. Hungarians from all walks of life rose up against the mighty Soviet Union in a desperate fight for freedom. Thousands died, many others tortured and jailed, 200,000 would flee, bringing untold talents to the shores of many nations, some 38,000 coming to the U.S. in the first year alone.

AHF, member organizations and the entire community sprung into action. Building on its experience during WWII, AHF activated its second Hungarian Relief Program, raising over $525,000 and, working closely with the International Rescue Committee, found beds and supplies to aid in the resettlement effort.

In all, 200,000 care packages were sent by countless local and national groups. The greatest benefactors of the movement were: Mrs. László Széchényi (née Gladys Vanderbilt), Lajos Szánthó, president of the Virginia Kentucky Tobacco Company and Daniel Szantay, president of the Santay Corporation. Total estimated costs of the relief program exceeded three million dollars.1945: The American Hungarian Federation and the Verhovay Insurance Association (a founder of AHF who would later become the William Penn Association) purchased ambulances for the American Red Cross.
