The AHF Disaster Relief Fund - Hurricane Katrina and Flooding in Transylvania

Update 11/23/2005 - AHF distributes $4,500.00 in Disaster Relief Funds to Transylvania. The AHF Disaster Relief Fund targets Hungarian disaster victims, currently those affected by hurricane Katrina and Transylvania flooding. Overall, the fund has taken in $6,500.00. The $4500.00 was distributed to Székelyudvarhely Mayor Szász Jeno on November 5th. A week earlier, AHF distributed funds to Judith Petho of the Arpadhon (Albany, LA) Hungarian Settlement Historical Society (HSHS). Julia Bika of the Louisiana Hungarians, who also suffered the wrath of Katrina, represented AHF as our liaison to HSHS.

Donations were received from as far away as Australia. Special thanks must be given to San Diego’s House of Hungary who collected $2500.00. AHF also thanks other organizations involved in the relief effort. The Minnesota Hungarians collected $1300.00. The Hungarian Knights of St. John (Johannita Rend) another $300.00. And there are many more stories like this. On October 8th in East Brunswick, New Jersey, the AHF Gala Dinner to support Hungarian Schools in the Csango Regions of Transylvania raised $15,000.00.
