Hungary held parliamentary elections on April 3, 2022, five weeks after Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine. Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz–KDNP alliance won 135 of the 199 seats, its fourth consecutive two-thirds majority. A six-party opposition alliance, United for Hungary, led by Péter Márki-Zay, won 57 seats; Mi Hazánk won 6, and the German minority list 1.
The 2022 result set the stage for the next four years: continued disputes with the European Union over the rule of law and frozen EU funds, Hungary’s position on the war in Ukraine, and its delayed ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership. It also explains why the 2026 result, when Péter Magyar’s new Tisza party won a two-thirds majority of its own, was such a significant change. See our story on the 2026 election.
