Hungarians in Serbia: Vojvodina After Hungary’s Election

The 2022 Serbian census counted 184,442 Hungarians, about 2.7 percent of the population, most of them in the northern province of Vojvodina (Délvidék), around Subotica (Szabadka), Senta (Zenta) and Novi Sad (Újvidék).

Political representation

The Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (VMSZ/SVM), led by Bálint Pásztor, is the community’s largest party and a long-time partner of Serbia’s ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). After Hungary’s April 2026 election there was speculation the party might change course. On April 15, 2026, Pásztor confirmed VMSZ would remain in the coalition, and said he had spoken with Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Péter Magyar.

On April 18, 2026 a new opposition grouping, Vojvodina Hungarian Relaunch, was formed, bringing together several smaller groups.

Support from Budapest

For years, the Hungarian government has funded economic development, schools, churches and media in Vojvodina. According to Daily News Hungary, Magyar’s talks with Pásztor signaled “fundamental changes” in how those funds are used, and he criticized Hungarian-funded media outlets in the region. How this will play out is not yet clear.
