US Sanctions on Antal Rogán: Imposed and Lifted in 2025

On January 7, 2025, in its final weeks, the Biden administration imposed Global Magnitsky sanctions on Antal Rogán, then the minister heading the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office, over alleged corruption.

On April 15, 2025, the State Department removed Rogán from the sanctions list, saying the measures were inconsistent with US foreign policy interests. Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó of the decision.

Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Elizabeth Warren, the ranking members of the Senate Foreign Relations and Banking committees, criticized the reversal. They said the Global Magnitsky Act requires the President to notify the relevant congressional committees at least 15 days before terminating sanctions, and that no notice was given.
