AMERICAN HUNGARIAN FEDERATION MEETS WITHFOREIGN POLICY OFFICIALS

8/28/09–Washington, DC – On Wednesday, August 26, the Central and East European Coalition (CEEC), an assembly of 18 ethnic organizations representing the communities of Central and East European descent, met with Obama Administration foreign policy officials.

The American Hungarian Federation (Federation), an active member of the CEEC, was represented by the Federation’s co-president and chair of its International Relations Committee, Frank Koszorus, Jr.

In an hour-long meeting at the National Security Council, the CEEC met with Antony J. Blinken, Deputy Assistant to the President and National Security Advisor to the Vice President, Michael A. McFaul, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Russia and Eurasia, National Security Council, and Leslie Hayden, Director for Russian Affairs, National Security Council.  The topics discussed included: the President’s trip to Russia and the Vice President’s trip to Georgia and Ukraine; democracy, human rights and minority rights in the region; the missile defense shield; NATO, its enlargement and other security considerations; and energy security.

The CEEC also met with representatives of the Office of Public Engagement who are responsible for interacting with the various ethnic communities.

“It was important for the CEEC to hear from the President’s and Vice President’s foreign policy advisors about the administration’s approach to key issues relating to Russia and Central and Eastern Europe,” said Mr. Koszorus.  “It was equally important for us to reiterate that democracy and the respect for human and minority rights are critical for regional security and stability, especially in view of the highly objectionable and discriminatory language law adopted by Slovakia,” he added.
