AHF supporting scholarships to needy Hungarian minority students in 4 countries

8/9/2004 - The American Hungarian Federation supporting scholarships to needy Hungarian minority students from 4 countries...AHF Member Bela J. Bognar founded the Hungarian Scholarship Fund (HSF) to finance the educational needs of needy students of Hungarian descent in Hungary and former Hungarian lands. In 2003, support for the HSF has grown to over $12,500.00. Help AHF support this worthwhile cause. [< Back to all AHF news]

Dr. Bognar also founded the Hungarian Ancestry Scholarship Fund at Wright State University in the Fall of 1988. The HAS Fund, earmarked for American students of Hungarian origin, has grown to $60,000. However, Ohio law states that the person who raises funds cannot influence the decision as to whom the scholarships are given. It is a committee appointed by the President of the University Foundation which makes the decision. Furthermore, since the fund is designed to be an endowment type, only the interest/gains that accrue are given out each year. The University Foundation (i.e. its investment committee) invests the funds collected in stocks, hoping to realize 5 to 6% gain which is released each year.

HSF Founder, Bela Bognar writes:

When I retired on July 1, 2002, the University made me an offer I could not refuse. If I volunteered to continue raising funds, I could keep my office, computer and telephone and have unlimited postage privileges.

Here is the downside: From the beginning, I advertised the scholarship fund in Hungarian newspapers of which there are about two dozen in the U.S. and on the internet. The applications kept coming in, mostly from students in faraway places, such as Australia, Brazil, Germany. The majority of the applications came from Hungarian minority students who live outside the borders of historical Hungary. These students did not want to come to the U.S. and even if they did come to Wright State, the yearly 5-6% from the present fund would only cover a fraction of their tuition. The realization that our funds for the Wright State Scholarship could not be used for the most needy students was devastating to me. I was and still am angry with myself for agreeing to the stipulations for disbursement of the collected monies. Thus, the logical step was to start a new fund.

The Hungarian Scholarship Fund

In June of 1999 I received a letter from Zsuzsa Biro of Transylvania (Romania). This 18 year old wrote about her dream to become a teacher with the simple eloquence and clarity that I would expect from a much older person. She wrote that she was admitted to the best teacher's college in Hungary, but needed $950 a year which her parents did not have. I knew from that day on that we needed a new scholarship fund and put together a list of friends on whom I could count on for donations. The new Hungarian Scholarship Fund was born.

The pleasant surprise was that all of the $950 needed for Zsuzsa Biro came together in a few weeks. Four years later, Zsusza graduated from Karoli Gaspar Teacher's College in Nagykoros. More students wrote and our "family" kept growing. Here is a short report of the students we supported and continue to support.

During the summer of 2001 an agreement was reached between the Hungarian and Slovak governments that students who graduated from high school in Hungary but were residents in Slovakia, could not be subsidized by the Hungarian government. The medical school asked that Brigitta's parents pay $5,000 to cover the cost of the first year. Since they are very poor, this was out of the question; Brigitta was dismissed from the University. Upon contacting me in 2002, I advised Brigitta to go to England as an au-pair and learn English. She followed through and currently is in her third year living with a family and going to school in London. In March 2004 she took the Cambridge Test in English, and is ready to enroll in college this fall, majoring in Business Administration.

How to Help the HAS Fund?

12/28/2004 - A letter from Scholarship recipient

Sajnos a kettös állampolgársággal kapcsolatos népszavazás is
megbukott.

dolgoznak. Édesanyám, Éva egészségügyi novér, édesapám László egészségügyi
technikus. Mindketten az ,,Otthon,, nevu állami intézményben dolgoznak, ahol szellemileg fogyatékos emberek gondozásával foglalkoznak.
A családi helyzetemet nézve,szüleimmel élek.Egyke vagyok.1985 november
19-én születtem Bácska Topolyán. Az idén töltöm be a tizenkilencedik életévemet. Az általános iskolát Ómoravicán fejeztem kituno tanulmányi eredménnyel. Majd a középiskolát a topolyai Dositej Obradovic
Gimnáziumban, 4,07-es jeles tanulmányi eredménnyel. Angol nyelvbol, magyar
nyelvbol és képzomuvészetbol érettségiztem. Jelenleg a Szabadkai Óvóképzobe íratkoztam be, önkölcségire.
Illetve a négy
Ezenkívül sokat tevékenykedek a faluban, Teleházban.
Most a helyzetem
