AHF Questions Obama and McCain on Committment to Hungarian Democracy

11/6/2008 - The American Hungarian Federation Submitted Questionnaire to Presidential Candidates -- The Federation submitted identical questionnaires to Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain on a strictly non-partisan basis and for educational purposes only, not as endorsement of or opposition to any of the candidates. Barack Obama responds to Hungarian American Community acknowledging need to "continue strengthening democratic institutions throughout Central and Eastern Europe....[and] build respect for human and minority rights in that region and throughout the world." Hungary's Press also reacts.

The questionnaire covered a range of issues from strengthening democratic institutions and values, including the respect for the rule of law, in Central and Eastern Europe to minority rights and the right to autonomy for national minorities in the region. Others, such as Bela Liptak, also submitted questionnaires. President-Elect Obama responded with a letter addressed to Hungarian American community leaders in which he noted, among other things, that " we can continue strengthening democratic institutions throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Together, we can build respect for human and minority rights in that region and througout the world."

Barack Obama "szorosabb stratégiai viszonyt" szorgalmaz Amerika és Magyarország között - derül ki a demokrata politikusnak még az elnökválasztás előtt magyar szervezeteknek írott leveléből, amelyről Frank Koszorús, az Amerikai Magyar Szövetség (AHF) társelnöke szerdán tájékoztatta az MTI-t.
"Amerika sok kihívással fog szembenézni a következő néhány évben, és szeretném, ha szorosabb stratégiai viszony lenne országunk és Magyarország között" - olvasható az Obama által aláírt levélben. "Az országainkat összekötő közös érdekekre és értékekre építve tovább erősíthetjük a demokratikus intézményeket Kelet-Közép-Európában" - írta Obama, akit kedden az Egyesült Államok új elnökévé választottak.

Az 1906-ban alapított AHF, amely az amerikai magyar érdekképviseleti szervezetek egyike, korábban azonos "kérdőívvel" fordult a két elnökjelölthöz, Obamához és a republikánus John McCainhez. Arról tudakozódtak, milyen lépéseket tennének egyebek között a közép-európai demokratikus intézményrendszer erősítésére. A kérdések között szerepelt, hogy támogatják-e a kisebbségi jogokat, közöttük az autonómiához való jogot, és mit tennének azért, hogy csökkenjen Európának Oroszországtól való energiafüggősége? Az AHF arra is kíváncsi volt, hogy a két jelölt vajon egyenlő módon kezeli-e majd a magyar parlament pártjait, tekintettel arra, hogy "az Egyesült Államok időnként előnyben részesítette a szocialistákat más, parlamenti ellenzéki pártokkal szemben". Az is kérdésként merült fel, hogy "külügyi tisztviselőket küld-e majd nagykövetnek Magyarországra politikai kinevezettek helyett?"

Obama válaszában azt írta: "közösen tekintélyt szerezhetünk az emberi és kisebbségi jogoknak a térségben és az egész világon". Levelében több felvetett kérdést nem érintett. Ellenben leszögezte, hogy az amerikai magyar közösség Amerika fontos része, és "Magyarország az Egyesült Államok fontos szövetségese".

Állásfoglalása szerint a magyarok figyelemre méltó hozzájárulásának köszönhetően Amerika jobb hely lett; a magyarok jelentős eredményeket értek el a tudományokban, a kultúrában és egyéb téren. Obama kifejezte reményét, hogy az amerikai és a magyar nép között mélyebb barátság jön létre.

A demokrata politikus méltatta, hogy Magyarország a NATO nagyra értékelt tagja, amely az EU tagjaként és a transzatlanti közösség teljes partnereként "tért vissza Európába". A magyar katonák az amerikaiakkal vállvetve harcoltak Irakban és Afganisztánban; "az amerikai magyarok jogosan lehetnek büszkék" - írta.

Obama végül kifejezte: Joe Biden és ő együttműködésre törekszik az amerikai magyarok közösségével azoknak a fontos kérdéseknek a kezelésében, amelyekkel az Egyesült Államoknak és Magyarországnak szembe kell néznie a következő amerikai elnöki periódusban.

Hungarian American Community Leaders

Dear Friends,
I appreciate the opportunity to share a few thoughts with you as leaders of the Hungarian American community. Your community is an important part of the fabric of American life and Hungary is an important ally of the United States.

Over the years, many Hungarians have come to the United States and lived the American dream, contributing so much to American science and medicine, to our cultural life, to our universities, and to so many other fields. America is a better place thanks to your remarkable contributions.
America will face many challenges in the next few years, and I look forward to a closer strategic relationship between our country and Hungary, and even deeper friendship among our peoples. Building on the common interests and values that bind our two countries, we can continue strengthening democratic institutions throughout Central and Eastern Europe.
Together, we can build respect for human and minority rights in that region and throughout the world.

Hungary is a strong ally and a valued member of NATO that has “returned to Europe” as a member of the European Union, and a full partner in the transatlantic community. Hungarian troops have served shoulder to shoulder with U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hungarian Americans can be rightly proud of these sacrifices. Joe Biden and I look forward to working with the Hungarian American community as we
work to address the critical issues that the U.S. and Hungary will face in the next president’s term. Thank you again for the opportunity to share these thoughts, and I hope to have your support on Tuesday.
