(Washington, D.C.).  On April 1, 2010, AHF co-sponsored the screening of the award winning documentary, “The Soviet Story.”  The riveting film tells the story of the Soviet regime and its unspeakable crimes, such as the Great Famine in Ukraine, the Katyn massacre and the medical experiments in the Gulag.  The film also describes the collaboration between Stalin’s Soviet Union and Hitler’s Nazi Germany up until the time Germany invaded the Soviet Union, a collaboration often ignored or forgotten.

The screening took place at the Alex Gallery in Washington, D.C. which was also presenting an art exhibition appropriately titled “Lithuanian Season.” Victor Gaeten, founder and owner of the gallery welcomed the gathering along with the Federation’s President, Frank Koszorus, Jr., and Karl Altau, Managing Director of the Joint Baltic American National Committee, the other co-sponsor of the event.  Michael Haltzel, Senior Fellow at the Center for Transatlantic Relations of Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies sand formerly the senior foreign policy advisor to Vice President Biden when he was Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, shared his thoughts about the film.

“Twenty years after the end of the Cold War some have forgotten the horrors of the other brutalism of the twentieth century and the similarity between Communism and Nazism.  It’s important for people, especially students, to see this film lest we forget that history whose devastating influence we still see today,” said Mr. Koszorus in his welcoming remarks.

“The Soviet Story” is a story of an Allied power, which helped the Nazis to fight Jews and which slaughtered its own people on an industrial scale. Assisted by the West, this power triumphed on May 9th, 1945. Its crimes were made taboo, and the complete story of Europe’s most murderous regime has never been told. Until now…

”The Soviet Story” was filmed over 2 years in Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Germany, France, UK and Belgium. Material for the documentary was collected by the author, Edvins Snore, for more than 10 years. As a result, ”The Soviet Story” presents a truly unique insight into recent Soviet history, told by people, once Soviet citizens, who have firsthand knowledge of it.

Unique video footage
Rare footage shot in 1990, the last year of the USSR, shows an abandoned Soviet death-camp in Magadan, Siberia, where the KGB had carried out medical experiments on prisoners. The film also presents never before broadcasted Nazi footage showing Soviets helping Hitler launch WW2 and providing aid for the Nazi Blitzkrieg.

Exclusive images
”The Soviet Story” features a number of photographs taken by Heinrich Hoffmann, Hitler’s personal photographer. These pictures have never before been shown to the public. The film also presents several shocking Nazi documents found by the film’s author in the Political Archive of the German Foreign Ministry (2007).
