01/18/2018 - AHF condemns refusal by Ukraine to amend its anti-minority education law. AHF is concerned that Article 7 of the new Ukrainian education law limits the right of sizable minorities living in Ukraine, including Hungarians, Poles and Romanians, to continue to be educated in their mother tongue beyond the fourth grade. 12/19/2017 - Representatives of the American Hungarian Federation (AHF) met with U.S. Congressman Andy Harris, co-chair of the Hungarian Congressional Caucus, and his legislative director, Timothy Daniels, Esq. to discuss matters of mutual interest to AHF and the Caucus. [read more]

12/06/2017 - AHF writes letter to US Department of State to express its deep concern over the its Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor's (DRL) intent to take active measures to intervene in Hungary's political environment. AHF, founded 110 years ago, has long supported positive bilateral relations between the United States and Hungary as a means of advancing U.S. strategic interests in Central and Eastern Europe and feels such public criticism jeopardizes those interests. 11/6/2017 -AHF Celebrated 110 years of service to the community! AHF held its 110th Gala Anniversary of the American Hungarian Federation's incorporation in Cleveland Ohio, and over a century of service at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, DC on October 21. The program was a nostalgic look back at the Hungarians' immigration to the US and the extraordinary service of many persons who came to the aid of those coming to their new home. A special thank you to the Embassy and staff for their helpfulness. [read more]

10/11/2017 - AHF meets with Ambassador Kurt Volker to discuss current issues of interest to members of AHF, including Ukraine's new language law that curtails the Hungarian community's right to study in their mother tongue. AHF congratulated Ambassador Volker on his appointment as U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations. [read more]

Through an American Lens, Hungary, 1938: Photographs of Margaret Bourke-White. AHFs' Freedom Circle Member, Dr. Katalin Kadar Lynn, recently discovered a treasure trove of mostly unpublished photographs taken during a month-long trip to Hungary in 1938 by Life Magazine's most renowned photojournalist, Margaret Bourke-White. The photographs not only furnish us with a look at pre-WWII Hungary and its people, but because Bourke-White took unsentimental portraits of the major political figures in Hungary, from the far right to the far left, Communists, Fascists, Socialists, Social Democrats, Smallholders, as well as the primary government officials, it provides us with an insight into these individuals and history provides us with the consequences of their actions. AHF Book Review: Rememberance (Pamiec): Polish Refugees in Hungary 1939-1946 (Emlékezés - Lengyel Menekültek Magyarorszagon 1939-1946) by Grzegorz and Krystyna Lubczyk.
Throughout its history, Hungary offered refuge to a wide variety of ethnicities trying to escape persecution in their homelands. At the beginning and throughout the Second World War, Poles, including considerable number of its military, sought and received refuge from Nazi and Stalinist persecution. Eventually most of the soldiers went on and joined the Allied war effort and played an important part in the defeat of Nazi Germany.

A new two volume work by the former Polish ambassador to Hungary, Grzegorz Lubczyk and his wife Krystyna under the patronage of the Polish president, document the story of the Polish refugees in Hungary in Emlékezés (Pamiec or Rememberance) Polish Refugees in Hungary 1939-1946. The first volume gives an overview of what transpired and the second volume gives personal stories of many of the nearly 120,000 Polish refugees who were granted redoubt at nearly 200 locations scattered throughout Hungary.

Moments in AHF History

Memorial Day 2007:
AHF lays wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. AHF's 2007 Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery included a wreath laying the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 40 members and guests and throngs of tourists witnessed the special ceremony as AHF President Atilla Micheller was escorted by Lt. Col. Steve Vekony (US Army) and the First Califiornia Hussar Regiment. Arlington National is the final resting place for a number of Hungarian American Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. Following the wreath laying, the program included a remembrance and walking tour of Hungarian-American gravesites.

Joseph Pulitzer (b. 4/10/1847, Makó, Hungary, d. 10/29/1911, Charleston, SC)

Publisher, Civil War Volunteer, Father of the "Pulitzer Prize"
Responsible for funding the building of the Statue of Liberty

Pulitzer was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the 1st New York Cavalry Regiment which he joined almost immediately upon his arrival in the US. After a time in NewYork sweatshops, he went west and became a reporter. He saved his money, bought partial ownership of the Westliche Post, and when successful sold it. He then bought the St. Louis Dispatch which he merged with the Evening Post, and once that was a success, went to New York, bought the New York World, and a publishing tycoon was born. He then turned his attention to the Statue of Liberty which sat disassembled in disgrace with New York refusing to pay for erecting the statue.

Pulitzer started a fund with this aim and put the name of anyone donating to this project in his newspaper, making him one of the earliest known adopters of crowd-funding. Katalin Kádár Lynn, Ph.D. is a sustaining AHF Kovats Circle Member. She was born in Budapest and emigrated with her family to Germany at the end of WWII and then came to the US as part of the Displaced Persons immigration program. She was educated in the United States ( BA from the University of Colorado and an MLA from Washington University in St. Louis, MO). After a long career in the world of business, including a stint as a business professor at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO, she returned to graduate school to obtain a PhD at ELTE in Budapest and was awarded her PhD with honors. She is a publisher and author specializing in 20th century history, with an emphasis on WWII, the Cold War, and U.S.–East European political relations and Émigré Political Movements.
